It does sound like adding the two new options I mentioned will suit your workflow, and I think they make sense as options as I can see more people wanting that behaviour from the Preview Popup, so having them as options in the settings versus hidden behind having to create a Trigger rule also makes sense.

For the other two points in your requirements about moving items to the top when selected, and newly copied items appearing at the top, I know there are a couple of bugs there that we're working on, but when they're sorted out, that should also be working the way you're expecting.

Already, the Clipboard History has an option 'Show clipboard changes made by ClipboardFusion', which I have enabled, with the intention that I can see by looking at the top of the History what has most recently been put on the clipboard (and what is currently there).

Since pasting from the History involves putting that selected item onto the clipboard, I don't understand why anybody would want the Preview Popup to not show the current state of what is actually there now, after performing that operation. So I can't say I understand the thinking behind "not something we plan to change". All that I'm doing is having the Preview Popup show automatically, but it should show the same thing as what someone manually invoking the shortcut should see after performing such an operation.

So I must admit I don't see the point of adding new options.

To summarise what I expect:
    When copying either text or an image, that text or image should appear at the top of the History, in position #1.
    When selecting an existing History entry to paste into an application, that text or image should move to the top of the History, to position #1 (without creating a new, duplicate entry in the History).
    In both of the above cases, I expect to see an automatic Preview Popup, showing what is currently on the clipboard, just as if I'd manually invoked the Show Preview Popup shortcut afterwards.

This is done intentionally and not something we plan to change.

However, looking at your usage case for the Trigger, we're thinking that adding two new sub-options to the "Show Clipboard Preview Popup" option:

  • "Also show Preview Popup when text is copied"
  • "Also show Preview Popup when selecting item in Clipboard Manager"
I believe adding those would achieve what you're trying to do with the Trigger rule.   • Copy some other text to move the screenshot down the history list
  • Open Word and give the document focus
  • Click the screenshot in the history list to paste it into Word

EDIT (26 Sep): Scratch that comment about duplicates not being created. (1) when selecting images fron the History to paste into an application, new History entries are created at the top of the History, rather than moving the existing entries.

(2) No preview popup is shown when pasting the historical images, despite having a trigger to automatically show the preview popup whenever a change is made to the clipboard.

I must say this is becoming rather frustrating to me, as it's clear that not even 5 seconds of testing was done on your side. What is the solution? I think the image entry not moving to the top of the list happens when ClipboardFusion:
(a) Shows the Preview Popup (according to my automatic trigger rule to do so whenever clipboard content changes) and then immediately crashes (so presumably the move to the top of the history doesn't get a chance to happen).
(b) Doesn't show the Preview Popup but doesn't immediately crash either, but then crashes as soon as I then manually try to invoke the Preview Popup.

And then after doing that action (pasting an image from several entries prior in the History), if you try to invoke 'Show Preview Popup', ClipboardFusion crashes.

The developers have been struggling to get this to work properly for several releases now. We're coming up to 2 YEARS since I reported the major bugs in the first post. Actually, more than 2 years based on the age of some of the emails exchanged before I went a step further and posted the issues into this forum post.

I.e. it's been 2+ years since ClipboardFusion has been able to show a preview popup for an image copied to the clipboard, for example.

Surely you must agree that the situation is rather ridiculous. What are you guys doing? ]]>
